There is an Air Force musical connection to The WIZ. Charlie Smalls, the composer and lyric writer of this musical was a member of the 579th AF Band, Stewart AFB in Newburgh, NY. I had the privilege of being Charlie's room mate for a period and was exposed to the full depth of his creative abilities. A graduate of the Julliard School of Music, he was an incredible natural performer, both vocally and as a jazz pianist who volunteered many hours teaching me the fundamentals of modern jazz (both in the barracks and at some great NYC jazz clubs!). After his enlistment, he served as an arranger for "The Monkees", and played as a backup recording artist for a ton of big name performers.
So go get it guys! From what I saw this past summer at the TIB show in Buffalo, NY, there is no reason to believe that there are not priors out there who could easily capture a lead in this production. This could be the key to your dream! |
